First, make sure the store you're shopping from is using the TaxWisp app to handle sales tax exemptions. If they do, you’ll find multiple ways to access TaxWisp for submitting your exemption request:
- Look for the TaxWisp icon (%) in the store’s header menu.
- Check the product pages or other key pages for a "Request for Tax Exemption" option.
- If you're shopping from a store on the Shopify Plus plan, you may also see the exemption request option directly on the checkout page.
Once you find the "Request for Tax Exemption" button, click it and follow the on-screen instructions to complete your request by uploading the necessary documents.
2. What documents do I need to submit for a tax exemption request?
You'll need to submit the required documentation as specified by the store. This might include tax exemption certificates, resale certificates, or other relevant documents based on the store’s tax jurisdiction requirements. Ensure the documents are valid and up to date.
3. Can I apply for a tax exemption if I’ve already made a purchase?
TaxWisp cannot apply exemptions retroactively. Make sure to submit your exemption request and wait for approval before making your purchase. If you’ve already made a purchase, you may contact the store to request a refund for the tax portion, but this will depend on the store’s policy.
4. How will I know if my tax exemption request has been approved?
Once your exemption request is reviewed, you’ll receive a confirmation email. If your request is approved, your account will be marked as tax-exempt, and you won’t be charged sales tax on future purchases while logged in.

Yes, you can check the status of your exemption request through your customer dashboard in the store’s website. You’ll be notified of the request status via email as well.
6. What happens if my tax exemption request is rejected?
If your request is rejected, you’ll be notified via email with the reason for the rejection. If possible, contact the store to know the instructions on how to reapply or correct any issues with your request.
7. How can I make changes to my exemption request after submitting it?

Make sure your email address is correctly saved in the store’s system when you submit your exemption request. You’ll receive email notifications for every important update—such as approval, rejection, revocation, modifications, and upcoming expiration reminders. Keep an eye on your inbox to stay informed throughout the process.
